The recipe involves creating two doughs: a light, plain dough and a darker dough infused with cocoa powder. After their first rise, the doughs are rolled out and layered with a generous spread of Nutella. The rolled-up dough is then cut into strips and braided before baking. Once baked, the warm loaf is brushed with a simple sugar syrup to add a delightful sweetness. This recipe is perfect for special occasions or as a decadent weekend breakfast.

  1. Step 1

    First combine the dry ingredients. Add the egg and warm milk to the dry ingredients and knead briefly. Incorporate the softened butter into the dough and knead for an additional 5 minutes.

    Divide the dough into two equal parts. Add cocoa powder to one portion of the dough and knead well for 10 minutes. Allow both doughs to rest for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.

    On a floured surface, roll out both doughs into rectangles (approximately 29x48 cm). Place the cocoa dough on top of the plain dough. Spread Nutella over the cocoa dough, leaving a 5 cm border. Roll up the dough and cut the border into 1-2 cm thick strips. Braid the strips and place in a loaf pan.

    Let the braided loaf rest for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 180°C and bake for 20-25 minutes.

    Boil sugar and water until sugar dissolves. Brush the warm loaf with the sugar syrup and let cool completely.
